For those of you who are fans of Harry Potter, I think I've come up with a great way to continue to fun, even though the series is over! Workable Quidditch!
How could we Muggles make a workable game of Quidditch? I've pondered this long and hard, for I think there is a reasonably large-enough fan base out there to organize at least a small league of 3-4 teams. Here's what I've worked out so far:
Quidditch Pitch - a soccer field with three goals as described by Rowling, but the rings no more than four feet off the ground. Each ring should be about six feet in diameter; each goal separated by a distance of no more than three feet. This should allow the Keeper a reasonable chance of defending his hoops.
Keeper - The Keeper should be attired like a soccer goalee, the only difference being that he or she should have a helmet to protect against bludgers. A face mask or mesh would be optional (since the magical assistance of Madam Pomfrey is not an option).
Beaters - Two runners outfitted with small cricket bats and balls. Lacking self-guided bludgers, there will be two attendants on the sidelines whose sole purpose will be to retrieve the drops or misses and return them to the Beaters. The bludgers will be color-coded so the attendants will know whose bludgers are whose. Hitting an opposing team member with a bat is a foul good for two free throws at a goal without interference by the Keeper.
Chasers - Sprinters or long-distance runners who will then toss the Quaffle to each other.
Seeker - The Seeker is a runner who will attempt to catch the Snitch, which will be a yellow remote-controlled airplane under the guidance of a neutral party on the sidelines.
Have I missed anything?

Maybe the goalie would be in lacrosse goalie gear.
And the beaters would have more of a Lacrosse stickish kind of bat? Not completely lacrosse-ish but enough to hold the bludger for a second or two...a "walking" foul could be called for holding it too long.
What do you think?

I've also seen Quidditch played at HP conferences. The Water Quidditch in Vegas in 2006 was particularly epic! (My sister had never been so excited to cheer for a sport in her life!)
This year's con is in SF.
Here's the Quidditch link: www.hp2009.org/
WHEN? Our Quidditch tournament is on Friday, July 17 from 10 AM until about 4:30 PM; pickup Quidditch will be played starting at around noon, while the tournament players take a lunch break.
WHERE? The Beach Chalet fields at Golden Gate Park.

Cheers, y'all! ;D -

Re: Muggle Quidditch
Sat, September 5, 2009 - 9:41 AMHi there!I'm Chris Kokkiniotis and I'm gonna get right throught the subject. If you want this quidditch idea to work and move on you have to see what could possibly hold it back...One thing is the broomstick...people can't take serious a sport in which you hold a stick between your legs.Ok it is fun and all that but 1)it's dangerous 2 )you don;t need broomsticks. Why?The answer is simple;you can create a penalty for catching the ball with 2 hands(like a shootout or something),and you can make the pitch bigger because the players would run faster if you took the broom away. So,TAKE THE BROOM OFF THE GAME please.Another glitchy thing is the snitch...why not putting 2 snitches in the game?one for each team? The snitch will be a player like everyone else(a fast player, maybe the fastest) and each team's seaker will hunt down the snitch of the other team. It's gonna work. And it will be more interesting.Another thing...the bludges...put some rugby here...Make 3 players be the bludges without actually holding a black ball...how?those players will have the opportunity to take down any player of the opposing teamwith tackles and/or soft hits.Make a 1 vs 1 contact rule , which means that only one bludge at a time can take down a player.2 or more take downs at the same player by 2 or more bludges will be a serious penalty.Let's go back to the snitch.Don't end the match when someone catches the snitch.GIve them 60 points or something and make a rule about ending a game only when the golden snitch is caught 3 times. It makes sense.More action, more realism.More sport.Take my suggestions under consideretion and contact me on my msn chrisofegal@hotmail.com. Thank you!BB!
